Mary lives in Zambia and has a foot deformity, and in Zambia the sort of specialty medical care Mary needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Mary who have little hope for the future.
Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Mary grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Mary has a curable disability! But you can change Mary's life forever.

Another child like Mary Mukoka needs her opportunity for life-changing care. You can help make that possible right now.

About Mary

Mary Mukoka lives in the Nakoli Community where children with disabilities are hidden away in the house and kept out of view. Thankfully, things are changing so that health care workers are allowed into the home, helping children get the medical attention they need. Mary’s mother took her to a mobile clinic in September where Dr. Lastroni was able to identify Mary’s life-long condition as equinus foot.

Mary was born with this condition in her right foot, which means she has limited use of her ankle because of unnatural muscle tightness. To compensate for this, some patients start walking on tip-toe. Because Mary isn’t able to walk properly, she has never been able to make the journey to school. Though I only had an interpreter for a few minutes, I spent the rest of my time drawing with Mary. I wrote both of our names and encouraged her to copy it. Instead she settled for drawing people and animals. It was fun to watch how carefully she handled the pen, and how much enjoyment she got out of creating circles over and over.

When it was time to leave, I gave her a piece of paper with both of our names on it and the word “Friends.” She is scheduled to be admitted here on October 3 and receive surgery hopefully the next day. The operation involves lengthening the achilles tendon, and will be a relatively quick procedure. Hopefully she will one day be able to walk normally and run around as much as any kid should!

  2. Day 231It was pretty lonesome on Mary's side of the ward over the weekend, but now there are plenty of new admissions for her to befriend. http://bit.ly/ZaayPJ
    Tuesday May 21, 2013
  3. Day 227It's always a special moment when we get to see Mary's real smile! http://bit.ly/16qBmyd

  4. Day 226Mary is back for yet another operation! Looks like she had a haircut as well. Pray that today's surgery is successful! http://bit.ly/14rvbp0
    Thursday May 16, 2013
  5. Day 198Mary was reviewed during a mobile clinic to the Copper Belt, and because she lives so far away from our hospital she has not been able to come for follow-up appointments. This means that her foot has not made much improvement, so it looks like Mary will have to come back for yet another operation in May.
    Thursday April 18, 2013
  6. Day 191It looks like Mary missed her check-up yesterday. Next week a group of plastic surgeons will be coming to our hospital to do cleft lip/palate surgeries, so it may be a while until Mary returns for her biopsy.
    Thursday April 11, 2013
  7. Day 177Mary came for a check-up yesterday and went back home with both good and bad news. After having her cast removed, the doctor confirmed that her foot has been corrected! The bad news is that there is a mass on her thigh that looks slightly suspicious. She may be coming back for a biopsy in about two weeks. http://bit.ly/102p6O5
    Thursday March 28, 2013
  8. Day 162It's a long journey back home for Mary. She was discharged from the hospital on Friday but near the end of the month she will come back for a review and we will see if the second surgery made more improvements than the first.

  9. Day 156Mary is now recovering from her second operation. http://bit.ly/15zp2rB

  11. Day 155Mary's here! True to their word, Mary, mother and brother have returned to Beit CURE. Unfortunately Mary's condition is still present, so she has been re-admitted for another surgery. http://bit.ly/168xDCH
    Wednesday March 6, 2013
  12. Day 136This afternoon we managed to get in contact with Mary's family. We can hope to see her again on March 6!
    Friday February 15, 2013
  13. Day 133Today we tried calling Mary's family but unfortunately no one picked up. We hope to try again.
    Tuesday February 12, 2013
  14. Day 108Just like last time, Mary did not come for her scheduled review date, but it is likely she will come on a random day. All we hope for is that she is doing well!
    Friday January 18, 2013
  15. Day 70Mary and her parents came to CURE on their own accord for review. She seems to be doing well, though she still uses a slight tip-toe walk. She's been asked to come back for review in January. http://bit.ly/SNpLzz
    Tuesday December 11, 2012
  16. Day 70Here was Mary's foot immediately after having her cast removed. http://bit.ly/Vwzxoc
    Tuesday December 11, 2012
  17. Day 59Dr. Lastroni wasn't able to make the stop in Kabwe this last week, so unfortunately there is no update on how Mary's doing. Since they live in a remote village, there is no phone number available. This won't be the last trip to the Copper Belt, so there is still a chance of seeing her in the future.
    Friday November 30, 2012
  18. Day 57Since Dr. Lastroni is back in the Copper Belt again this week, he's going to review Mary at her home in Kabwe. When he comes back we should have a new photo of her to share with you!
    Wednesday November 28, 2012
  19. Day 37Mary's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 11/28/2012
    Thursday November 8, 2012
  20. Day 37Mary was the first one into clinic for review. She had her cast removed, which was a scary process for her, but now she may start exercises and walk around. She will be reviewed when Dr. Lastroni goes to Kabwe for mobile clinic on November 28. So glad that she has made it through this process! Thank you for all the support. http://bit.ly/Rkj33v

  21. Day 13Congratulations! Mary's funding goal is met!

  24. Day 8Mary is scheduled for followup at CURE Zambia - Mary was discharged on October 8 and will be coming back for review on November 7. I'm happy that she can now rest and heal in the familiarity of her own home. Thank you for the great support!
    Wednesday October 10, 2012
  25. Day 7Here is Mary's surgery collage for your viewing pleasure. After giving anesthesia and sanitizing her leg, Dr Lastroni made the quick snips necessary to lengthen Mary's tendons. She's been resting in the ward and playing a lot with her adorable little sister. http://bit.ly/SL69Pv
    Tuesday October 9, 2012
  26. Day 3Mary is in recovery at CURE Zambia - Mary's surgery today was very quick. It was good for me to be there with her, and I hope she's getting good rest tonight. Pictures to come!
    Thursday October 4, 2012
