Bwalya lives in Zambia and has infant clubfoot, and in Zambia the sort of specialty medical care Bwalya needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Bwalya who have little hope for the future.
Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Bwalya grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Bwalya has a curable disability! But you can change Bwalya's life forever.

Another child like Bwalya Mulenga needs his opportunity for life-changing care. You can help make that possible right now.

About Bwalya

In a dark, crowded room in a school for disabled children, I met 4-month-old Bwalya Mulenga. Her mother had brought her that day for clinic, a mobile clinic, to be specific. I was with Dr Lastroni and Pastor Harold on a three-day mobile clinic through the Copper Belt in Zambia, admitting new patients to our hospital at Beit CURE. We certainly weren’t at a loss for new kids. Though Bwalya was the 20th new patient I’d met that day, she had a charm all her own.

Bwalya was born with clubfoot in both feet, a condition that is painless for infants but quickly grows into a complicated problem as the child grows up and learns to walk. If it is treated early, the child will be more likely to have a normal life. This is why it’s so good that Bwalya is less than a year old. Her mother didn’t know this much about clubfoot, however, because when her daughter was born, she was very worried, thinking that Bwalya would never be able to walk. Bwalya was her second child, but she simply hadn’t seen anything like clubfoot before.

As an interpreter and I talked to the mother, Bwalya squirmed and spun in her mother’s lap, looking like she was ready to explore the far corner of the room where other children were waiting to meet with Dr Lastroni. She moved like a dancer, bobbing her head and blowing spit bubbles. I always feel refreshed by the curiosity and openness of babies, as well as the fact that I don’t need a translator to understand them. Bwalya was scheduled to have both feet treated on September 24. Maybe a few months from now she will come back for review, and I'll get to see her walk!

Treatment Note

Bwalya is suffering with clubfoot, but as an infant our doctors have determined that her condition can be treated through a less-expensive multi-stepped casting process called the Ponseti method. As a result, Bwalya's care will be reflected in (instead of one surgery) a series of updates throughout the casting process.

  1. Day 183Here is a photo of Bwalya wearing her foot braces. She must continue wearing them at night, but it sounds like she's making wonderful progress! Her next check-up at Beit CURE won't be until July. http://bit.ly/ZZBmgY

  4. Day 119It saddens me to say that Bwalya never came for her review. Though we missed that chance to see her again, we know that she could very likely show up another day.

  6. Day 41Though it was good to see her face, it was so exciting to see her new feet! Her treatment worked beautifully as shown by her straight feet. Yay! http://bit.ly/SsN95Z

  7. Day 41Bwalya made it for her follow-up appointment today! We were so excited to see her adorable face again. She had her casts removed and was given special shoes or braces to wear on her feet to keep the clubfoot from recurring. She'll be back for review in January! http://bit.ly/QQjEJM

  8. Day 21Bwalya is scheduled for followup at CURE Zambia - Bwalya was discharged on October 5 with a follow-up appointment on October 29. Thank you all so much for your support and generosity!

  9. Day 17Congratulations! Bwalya's funding goal is met!
    Friday October 5, 2012
  10. Day 17Here is Bwalya's surgery collage. Like I said, she was so calm beforehand. They put her under and made small incisions on the back of her ankles in order to make cuts that will lengthen her tendons. Her legs were put into the proper position and the casts were applied. In one of the pictures you can see her stretching as she wakes up :) http://bit.ly/PWjxLn

  11. Day 16It was hard to believe how fast Bwalya's surgery was. She is truly a special baby. She didn't cry once, not even when they gave her anesthesia. She and her mom will probably be leaving our hospital tomorrow. I'm going to miss this sweetheart! Pictures of her surgery to come.

  12. Day 15Bwalya went to see Dr Lastroni once again, and he decided to take Bwalya's treatment a step further. Her casts have been removed because she is going to be getting a tenotomy on October 4. This is a simple procedure that involves cutting the tendons. I'm happy I'll get to be there with her in the OR the whole time.
    Wednesday October 3, 2012
  13. Day 13Bwalya getting her new casts put on. She was so calm the whole time, even while they cut the old casts off. She is getting new casts on October 1 and 4. I'm glad she'll be around for a while, just because I love seeing her face in the ward. http://bit.ly/W7ZI7f
