About Abdi
Abdi is from a part of Ethiopia that is very close to Sudan. The doctors are not sure why all of his limbs are so severely deformed, but they guess that it could be due to a certain birth control method used in villages like his. The mothers take a medicine that is not safe (unknown to them), and it often causes their children to have several deformities.
Abdi will have a surgery to save one of his legs, but the other will have to be amputated at the knee. His hands will not be operated on, although, they are noticeably unusual. There is nothing that can be done to fix them. Even though Abdi looks different from most 7 year old boys, he still goes to school. He is in first grade. He likes to play with his toys and still has dreams to finish his education and have a regular profession someday. Abdi hopes to be an evangelist or a pastor when he graduates.
Abdi's parents are farmers, and they are happy for their child to have hope to live a somewhat normal life. Communication with the family was very difficult, even with a translator. They speak a different language, and Abdi's father is very hard of hearing. Although, it was hard to have a conversation, their joy for their son to have a CURE is quite obvious.
