About Chisomo

Chisomo means “grace” when translated to English. Born as a beautiful and happy little girl, she grew up in Blantyre. She arrived at CURE with an old elbow fracture, which has diminished any hope of being about to use her arm correctly. Her parents originally searched for treatment at a local government facility, but they provided no relief.

She is very shy and often hides her face when she is given attention by one of the staff or doctors. She is still going to school and admires the work that nurses do, so she has been inspired to seek a career as a caretaker or nurse.

We asked about the fracture and how exactly it happened, and we heard a very unfortunate story. She was walking to her grandmother’s house along the river when she spotted a group of children playing in the water. The group exited the water to greet her but one girl stayed behind and pretended to need help. Chisomo thought the girl was actually drowning so she got very close to the girl and reached her hand out. She lost her balance and crashed hard against a large rock lying beneath the surface. She received a disabling injury trying to help someone that really didn’t need it.

The story doesn’t surprise us at CURE. You can almost see her heart when you look into her eyes. She’s a special girl and doesn’t want to be treated any differently than the children her age. There’s no doubt that Chisomo will grow up and provide unconditional care for the ones around her. We’re so very glad that she’s getting proper help and that we get to love on her during her time here.
