Catherine lives in Malawi and has clubfoot, and in Malawi the sort of specialty medical care Catherine needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Catherine who have little hope for the future.
Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Catherine grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Catherine has a curable disability! But you can change Catherine's life forever.

About Catherine

Tears ran down Catherine’s cheeks as I began to photograph her. She didn’t make a sound but she was clearly nervous and very worried. I put the camera down and reached for her hand. Surprisingly, she didn’t resist as I squeezed her hand and showed her a big smile.

Catherine has an extreme case of bilateral clubfoot and has traveled from Milanje to get help. The family has zero experience with clubfoot and Catherine’s two sisters are normal, healthy kids. She is unable to wear shoes and walking is extremely painful. A lot of her classmates make fun of her condition and we could see the embarrassment in her eyes as we photographed her feet. The CURE surgeons may only do one leg at a time since Catherine is too old to be carried around during the day. One leg at a time allows the use of crutches. But we won’t know for sure until she arrives.

Her family was seeking treatment long before arriving at our hospital. Her grandmother took her to Zomba, another city close to Blantyre for help. Doctors had no answer for her there. Thanks to another organization working in Africa in the healthcare sector, CURE was recommended and Catherine stopped by the clinic one day last week. She will return on the 21st of October and check into the ward to await her day of surgery. Please pray for this sweet girl as she returns to CURE.

  2. Day 192The frames are off! Check her out now, she is much happier to be in plaster casts. She will have a small procedure on Monday in the operating theater, then fresh plaster casts will be put on both legs. She should be discharged as early as tuesday. http://bit.ly/17rH7H4
    Thursday April 18, 2013
  3. Day 190Can we take too many photos of Catherine? We don't think so, she's absolutely adorable and so photogenic. She is scheduled to have her frames removed TOMORROW! She is excited to say the least and we are too!
    Tuesday April 16, 2013
  4. Day 189Catherine received adjustments on both frames on friday. She doesn't like the daily turns so the doctors decided to do the adjustments in theater with anesthesia. She recovered well, since she's no stranger to the operating theater. Her father left over the weekend and her grandmother arrived to continue her stay. She is certain to stay this entire week, possible frame removal next week.
    Monday April 15, 2013
  5. Day 183Catherine is still hanging in there. She's more calm during the daily turns now. The doctors tells us that she still has 1-2 more weeks before frame removal. The pin sights are clean and not infected and both legs seem to be really close to proper alignment.
    Tuesday April 9, 2013
  6. Day 178It looks like Catherine is about 2 weeks from going home. Her father is getting anxious, he is ready to get back to farming duties but understands that the process can't be any quicker. It will be harvest time soon in Malawi. http://bit.ly/XZFJHz

  7. Day 176Catherine had a nice weekend at CURE, complete with a small party thrown by the CUREkids staff on Monday. She has been in the ward longer than anyone else now, and it shows with the doctors and nurses. She is one loved little girl here. She is even flexing her seniority status for all of the new patients as she wheels by them to get the closest view of the TV when a video is playing.
    Tuesday April 2, 2013
  8. Day 170When asked what she liked about her stay at CURE, she told us playing in the CUREkids office. She loves to put in earbuds and listen to worship music. Today, she fell asleep in our office. She's absolutely precious!
    Wednesday March 27, 2013
  9. Day 169Catherine is another day closer to getting those frames off! Still a long way to go but we love spending time with her. She loves bubbles and stops by the CUREkids office daily to fill the room with bubbles. She tells us that her favorite possessions at home are her dolls.
    Tuesday March 26, 2013
  10. Day 168Catherine is perfectly fine except for 10 minutes everyday when the doctors must make turns on her frames. She knows when it's coming now after morning rounds and she looks pitiful until it's over. We try to make the rest of her day awesome, by giving her lots of attention and giving her access to the toy box in the CUREkids office. She discovered a magnetic dartboard today and was quite happy with her find.

  12. Day 164Not a good day for Catherine. She is now wearing frames on both legs and she is not exactly loving it. The tough part will be the daily turns, which will cause her some pain and discomfort. She's a completely different little girl than when she first arrived in October. She talks, smiles, laughs. She is always on the move in the ward and she melts hearts with her beautiful little smile. http://bit.ly/10naZnx

  13. Day 163Catherine Yohane has arrived at CURE Malawi. Unfortunately, she is back because her clubfoot reoccured in both legs. CURE doctors see this from time to time but there is no predictability which children will be affected. The next step for treatment for Catherine are taylor frames on both legs that slowly draw the lower leg and foot into proper alignment. For sweet Catherine, it means that she will be in the hospital for a few weeks. The doctors will need to adjust the frames every day for 4 weeks, minumum. Learn more at http://bit.ly/QYXWla
