About Chifundo

Something you will almost never see in Malawi is children doing cartwheels, back handsprings, or any other kinds of gymnastics. There are no children in the front yards testing their acrobatic skills, it’s just not what most of the do. There must be a few pockets of daring and flexible children though, because it was an acrobatic competition among friends that left eleven-year-old Chifundo Gatawo with an immobile right elbow.

Playing around with his friends, Chifundo fell and dislocated his right elbow early in 2012. He went to the hospital and a cast was placed on it, but that didn’t really fix the problem. In fact, when the cast came off, Chifundo was unable to flex his elbow. Now those same friends who saw him get hurt in the first place, laugh at him because of his awkward and stationary elbow. Some friends they are!

Chifundo will come to CURE and his elbow will be fixed so it can move again. Before he knows it, Chifundo will be back doing gymnastics with his friends, though I’m sure this time he will be a little more cautious and not try a trick that could send him back to CURE.

  2. Day 14Chifundo's treatment date has been changed to 11/14/2012 - Today is Chifundo's last day in the ward. He goes home this afternoon to keep recovering. He has been such a joy to have in the ward for his time here. He's always smiling and laughing and just absolutely delightful. Keep this sweetheart in your prayers as he continues his journey to recovery.
