About Lawrence
The saying “don’t play with fire or you will get burned,” though metaphorical in most usages, has extremely practical implications. Kids in Malawi are around and playing with fire all the time for cooking, for keeping warm, for a place to sit where the mosquitoes won’t bite. Their lives revolve, in some ways, around an open flame. It is that same, vital flame, however that often becomes very destructive. Two-year-old Lawrence Pitala experienced this side of fire when he fell in it and burned his hand.
Left unsupervised, as is normal in Africa, while his mother was fetching water and his dad was away, Lawrence was waddling around the village and as he passed the open flames he tripped, as toddlers tend to do. He fell into the fire and his right hand. As the burn healed it contracted and caused his fingers to curl in. He has very limited range of motion in his right hand because of this and consequently cannot really use his hand for anything.
Though we can’t really stop him from playing with or around fire as it is the way of life here, we can fix his hand and hope and pray it doesn’t happen again. That is exactly what we intend to do when Lawrence comes in for surgery to release his burn contractures and learn how to use his hand fully once again!

JSON RSS- Day 112Lawrence didn't leave us with any contact information and we haven't seen him at all since his admission date was due, so it's unfortunately time to archive his case. We pray we will see him eventually but right now it's time to hang it up. Thanks for your help!

Friday June 29, 2012 - Day 51Lawrence's treatment date has been changed to 07/09/2012 - Lawrence has not showed up for his surgery yet. Unfortunately we don't have any contact information for him so we can't call to see when they will be able to come. Pray they make their way to us somehow, and soon.
Wednesday June 27, 2012 - Day 24Lawrence's treatment date has been changed to 06/04/2012 - So Lawrence is a little late for his appointment, but don't give up home yet. Please pray they make it in VERY soon!
