About Elizabeth
It’s one thing to be seriously injured, but it’s something totally different and much more despicable to be injured and totally neglected. That is exactly the situation now eight-year-old Elizabeth Muta found herself in about a year ago when she was seriously burned in a brush fire. Though her story starts off rough, it has a pretty happy ending, one not all children are lucky enough to have.
Elizabeth was on her way home from school with her friends, walking on a path through the brush they always use as a shortcut, when something unexpected happened. A wildfire blew through the area causing her friends to bolt ahead while Elizabeth fell behind, getting her ankle caught in a hole. The fire quickly caught up to her an burned her left leg severely. When she had made it home and her father saw what had happened, he seemed less than concerned. He was raising six children on his own since his wife died and couldn’t be bothered with such a problem. She wasn’t taken to the hospital, she was just left to heal, and consequently develop a burn contracture, on her own.
Eventually her father abandoned her and the rest of her siblings and she was adopted by a man whose heart just broke when he saw her condition. Of no relation to her at all, he took her in to his own family of three children and a wife, and made it a point to get Elizabeth the help she needs. He is looking forward to her surgery so he can get her back into school, as she has not been since the accident considering the only way she can move is to crawl. She’s also going to need two good legs to go visit her brothers and sisters who were adopted into other sympathetic families in their area.

Monday July 16, 2012 - Day 102Elizabeth's treatment date has been changed to 11/25/2012 - Elizabeth was shuffled around a bit and then she was sent home. Sh went home in a splint and will be seen again at the next clinic in Mzuzu.
Monday July 9, 2012 - Day 95We were wondering why we hadn't seen this crazy kid hobbling around the ward in a while. She was at Feed the Children for a few days, but she's back today!
Monday July 2, 2012 - Day 89Elizabeth is still around, she's having a blast playing with all of the kids in the ward. She walks with a walker most of the time, to help her lug around that heavy cast, but she's definitely up and zooming around!

Tuesday June 26, 2012- Day 78Elizabeth is in recovery at CURE Malawi - Elizabeth had surgery and is doing great! She's still in the ward to make sure her skin grafts take properly but she looks happy, and she's having a great time with the other kids!

Friday June 15, 2012- Day 57Elizabeth has arrived at CURE Malawi - Elizabeth arrived on Monday but in the shuffle of the shocking influx of CURE kids that came in this week, her status was not updated, so for that we apologize. She has just been hanging out in the ward all week, awaiting her surgery which will probably come next week.
