About Hero
The theories parents and unhelpful onlookers come up with to explain the birth defects of children are anything but boring and unimaginative. Most of them come from the strong belief in the supernatural that can be seen in a lot of African countries. Witchcraft and a surprising and rightful belief that God is still as powerful and active as He was in the days of Jesus lend themselves to some incredible stories. Maria Jere, the mother of one-week-old Hero Jere who has bilateral clubfoot, has experience with these stories because of the explanations friends and relatives have come up with in the past week, to justify Hero’s condition.
When Maria realized there was something wrong with Hero’s feet, she was devastated. She didn’t know what to do or where to turn and she was afraid for the future of her child. At the same time however, she found comfort in the fact that God had given her this little boy just the way he was, and he was such a blessing to her life. As she searched for answers, she came up against a lot of unwanted commentary; people told her Hero was born the way he was because Maria was laughing at children who had clubfeet when she was pregnant. Luckily, through all the discouragement she received, she had one friend nice enough to refer her to CURE, as they had a child who had treatment here and it turned out very well for them.
Maria and Hero came and we are very glad they did. All will be well with Hero’s little feet in no time. Despite the tough week they faced with critics they thought were supposed to be their friends and family, Maria is happy and is looking forward to the outcome of the recurring treatments.
Treatment Note
Hero is suffering with clubfoot, but as an infant our doctors have determined that his condition can be treated through a less-expensive multi-stepped casting process called the Ponseti method. As a result, Hero's care will be reflected in (instead of one surgery) a series of updates throughout the casting process.
