About Murere
Let's just start off by saying that Murere Pere has got some style! He showed up to our clinic in brown leather shoes, black skinny jeans, a red shirt with neat little details on the collar, and a pink sweater, which he let me know right off the bat was not his idea. Apparently, it was this attention to fashion that made him realize that he had a knee condition. Murere recalled how it happened, telling us, “It was just after skinny jeans became popular. I had just gotten my first pair, and when I wore them, the kids in my class noticed that one of my knees seemed swollen.” His caretaker jumped in and began telling how they had visited a hospital a while back, and that the doctors said there was fluid build up. He was admitted for one month but the fluid never went away.
His discharge from the hospital coincided with his school holidays, so Murere was sent home to his father to recover. At home, his father decided to try a traditional medicine man instead of another conventional one. Knowing that his son would refuse to go with him, he lied to Murere about where they were going. Murere told me, “Now I have scars around my knee as a result of what the traditional doctor did.” Apparently, the doctor made incisions on Murere’s knee and tried inserting some traditional medicine. Clearly, that failed, and now they've crossed paths with us.
Murere is hopeful that this time he will get a solution to his knee problem that actually lasts. He also confided in me about his father, saying that he was concerned that his father is still very traditional and that he would love to be equipped with ways of slowly introducing him to the Jesus that he has learned about in school. “His father is very fierce, a typical Maasai man who is never questioned. I am sure that is why Murere sat through the painful ordeal at the traditional healer. If Murere is able to find a solution to his condition that will work, then we can finally be able to get through to his father and introduce him to a different way of doing things,” Murere’s guardian told me. This young man's case is exciting, and he has a beautiful story to tell. We are so ready for him to get here, because we know God has big plans for this ambitious 12-year-old!
