About Stephan
Stephen is a brilliant little guy. He is the only member of his family to be able to go to school and when we met up with him in his home area of Kitale, he was the one translating back and forth between his mother and me. He had only been in school for one year, but boy did he catch on quick. His confidence and desire to show off a bit warmed my heart. I would ask him questions about his medical history and how his stiff foot came about and he would quickly interpret both sides like a grown man. I very much enjoyed our time together.
When Stephen came into this world, he was a completely healthy baby. It wasn’t until he turned two that he began to decline in his development. He stopped walking, had a hard time eating, and even lost his sight. His mother then began the journey to find treatment for her son. Stephen spent quite a bit of time in the hospital on feeding tubes, but no full recovery was ever made. Possible diagnosis were thrown around like cerebral palsy, but the family left the hospital uncertain as to what was wrong with their son. He left the hospital with a stiff leg and could only walk if he was up on his tiptoes. When Stephen gets to CURE in July, we will do an Achilles tendon lengthening procedure to help release the stiffness in his leg and give him better range of motion for walking.
We are so thankful for God’s intervention in bringing Stephen to CURE. I pray that Stephen will not only get his foot deformity healed but that his family will continue to believe in him and send him to school to continue his education. I see such greatness in Stephen, he has such a bright future and I know our Father in heaven has a big plan and purpose for him!
