Harun lives in Kenya and has untreated burns, and in Kenya the sort of specialty medical care Harun needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Harun who have little hope for the future.

Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Harun grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Harun has a curable disability! But you can change Harun's life forever.

About Harun

I guess the term “child” can be defined different ways depending on a number of factors, but I think we could come to an agreement that someone younger than 10 years old is by all means a child. And therefore, a child should not be left in charge of another child. It’s just a recipe for a disaster. Case in point, Harun.

When he was about a year old, his mom left for work, giving responsibility for her 3 kids to the eldest of them, who was about 10 at the time. And here in Kenya, especially in very rural settings, that’s completely normal. It’s not like babysitters or preschoolers have much of a market. Anyway, his mom didn’t divulge many details, but somehow while the 3 kids were playing, Harun’s arm had a run in with something hot in the kitchen…maybe hot coals, maybe hot water. Since the eldest of the children had no idea what to do, she just screamed right along with Harun. Fortunately, one of their neighbors heard her cry and immediately ran over to see what was going on. She contacted Harun’s parents and they both rushed home.

Harun and his mom spent that night in the hospital, and then that night was followed by 60 more. When they finally got discharged, his mother was too afraid to follow the post surgical treatment instructions the doctors had given her (massaging and gently straightening his fingers, wrist, and arm). The lack of follow through on those instructions is what led to the contractures that he is now scheduled to have released at CURE. Thankfully, I think Harun is a little too young to understand that a burn wound is not normal, because when I met him, he flaunted his scars, totally unlike what most children would do. At least come March, he’ll have even more reason to show off his arm’s new and improved look.

He had an infection for which our doctors prescribed antibiotics as his mother prepares to bring him back to CURE, Kijabe for the cleaning of the wound and a possible repeat skin graft.
