About Asha
I definitely won’t be there, but I dread the day that Asha will ask what happened to her feet. I did not like listening to her great grandmother, Mwana Fatuma Yusuf, narrate how Asha’s mother tried to kill her, and I can’t imagine the impact that will have when that reality reaches little Asha’s ears.
There’s a saying I’ve heard that says, “Hurt people, hurt people,” and I think that’s exactly what happened with Asha’s mother, Amina. When she was 10, her mother passed away. Before she could even understand what was going on, her father took her and her elder brother and left them with their grandmother. Four years later, when life was just starting to stabilize, their grandmother passed on. Amina and her brother were thus left fending for themselves. Her brother was able to get small time jobs in different constructions, but unfortunately for Amina, all she had to give was her body. Being young and inexperienced, she soon conceived Asha. When her baby was about six months old, Amina realized that taking care of another human being was anything but easy. Wanting out, she opted for what she thought was the best way out of the “mess” she was in. She decided to kill her baby.
According to Mwana Fatuma, “[Amina] bought paraffin, poured it on their mattress, placed Asha on it, then lit the mattress. From there she walked out and left the baby to burn.” Thankfully, the neighbors noticed the fire before it got too vicious, and they were able to rescue Asha before the fire consumed her. When Amina got back and realized that her baby was still alive, she ran away, coming back a few days later to find that the baby was admitted in a hospital. She stayed in the hospital for a few days, but again, got restless. This time, she snuck out of the hospital with the baby, dumped Asha with Amina’s late grandmother’s sister (Mwana Fatuma) and disappeared. That was the last time they saw her.
The story of Asha’s short life has thus far been a sad one. The beauty of it all is that she still has a lot of years ahead of her, and enough time to turn her sad story into one with a very happy ending. We have the chance to help her take a step in that direction by giving her the medical treatment she needs. In a few weeks, we look forward to welcoming Asha into our hospital & beginning the process of healing. Together we are a force for good, and so I hope you’ll join us in support of this little girl, reminding her of God’s truth in the book of Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Day 56 As always, Asha successfully melted my heart when I went to check on her this morning. She's also very fascinated with my camera, so I have high hopes for her future as a photographer :) She'll be hanging out over the weekend & doctors plan on changing her bandages next week to see how the grafts have taken. http://bit.ly/H61Cz3

Day 54 An absolute success...Dr. Mbugua released the contractures behind her right knee and on both of her ankles. Then after some stretching, he took skin grafts from her left thigh to fill in the gaps. Her great grandmother was all smiles after we brought her back to the ward, and I hope you'll continue praying for Asha as she recovers! http://bit.ly/Hf0FCj
