Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Kiloret grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Kiloret has a curable disability! But you can change Kiloret's life forever.

About Kiloret

Kiloret has lived a life of being dependent on people for the past 16 years. I cannot even start to imagine what that is like, especially for a teenager. But when I talked to her, she did not seem to mind it as much as I had imagined she would. She comes from the Maasai community in Kenya, a community known for being pastoralists. She was born with a number of medical conditions as a fourth child to her parents. All her older siblings had been delivered at home, so when her mom delivered Kiloret at home, she did not associate her daughter’s problem with home delivery. According to the Maasai community, a child is accepted with whatever condition they are born with, so even when they realized that Kiloret had medical conditions they accepted her just the same.

Looking at her file, the doctors had listed her condition as “quadriplegic cerebral palsy, bilateral club foot, and multiple joint stiffening.” That’s a mouth full and a lot for anyone to have to deal with. Basically though, Kiloret has a condition that affects her four limbs, making them stiff and unable to move normally. She might need a total of eight surgeries to correct the bilateral clubfeet, her knees, her hips and her hands. It is hard to describe the posture that she has had to assume…she seems to be kneeling, but with her legs to the side of her body. Kiloret has had to rely on her mother to move her from one place to another, and her mother told me, “As she adds more weight, my work becomes even harder. I have to move her practically everywhere…she cannot do it by herself.”

Thankfully, a Maasai lady’s responsibilities are restricted around the homestead, so Kiloret doesn’t have to be taken too many places. “I am expected to cook for my children & look after my two cows and ten goats. My only other role is smearing cow dung in our manyatta (Maasai village), so at least I can be able to take care of Kiloret,” her mother explained. But the thought that her daughter can get some sort of help excited her, and I know that the burden she currently has to bear will find some relief. As one of the interpreters explained to Kiloret the procedure she’s scheduled for at CURE, I saw her smile for the first time since she arrived for the clinic. Change is definitely a good thing for this young lady, and I’m so looking forward to seeing Kiloret smiling again as she watches her legs & hands become what she’s always hoped they could be.

  1. Day 55 There was no sign of Kiloret all today, but then just after clinic hours ended, guess who rolled through the door :) Doctors still reviewed her, and even Kiloret knows that her legs look "smart." She can extend past 90 degrees now, and doctors said her hips are in a good position. Even though it wasn't too late for a review, it was too late for them to head home, so Kiloret & her mom are spending the night here and then will be trained on range of motion exercises tomorrow. After that, the plan is to review her in 6 months! http://bit.ly/wlappm

  3. Day 22 Today, Kiloret was given the "ok" by doctors to head home! She's lovin' her wheelchair & was fitted for a leg brace at our orthopedic workshop. On behalf of Kiloret & her mom, I just want to thank you all for the support you've given. It makes more of an impact than I can explain, and I hope you'll continue praying for Kiloret until we see her here in Kijabe for her follow up :) http://bit.ly/tkPjeL

  7. Day 15 This morning when I looked at the nurses report book, I saw this status next to Kiloret's name: Maintain traction 6 days. So guess she's hangin' out for awhile :) After reading that, I went to see her & her mom who, as always, were all smiles. Kiloret also wanted to show you guys her coloring achievements & new traction device :) http://bit.ly/vYhsKm

  8. Day 14 When I went to check on Kiloret today, she was exploring "lala land" so I definitely didn't interrupt :) But tomorrow, she's having her traction (device that's been maintaining a pull on her left leg) changed, so we'll see how her leg has been responding!

  9. Day 11 She's out & everything went great! Dr. Theuri released (cut the soft tissue that was causing the restriction in movement) her hip & her knee to get it bending in the right direction. I think her leg's new angle is quite an improvement, don't you? http://bit.ly/uU5O0l
