About Farida
I thank God for non-verbal cues. Most of them are almost universal, and in cases where there is a language barrier, at least they aid in bridging the communication gap, even if not completely. When I first met Farida, all cues indicated a very loving little girl. While her mother Gladys shook my hand, Farida hugged me then accepted my offer to sit on my lap. She was holding a bottle of juice, which she offered me, probably not actually wanting me to partake, but just in accordance with African hospitality. As I began to talk to her mother, she watched keenly from my lap as I scribbled down notes. Later on, she gestured that it was her turn to write, but clearly at four years old and having not started school yet, all she managed was a doodle.
As Gladys explained, everything about Farida’s story of development seemed normal. She sat up at the right age, began crawling at the right age, walked by the time she was 1 year old and achieved all other milestones that her mother expected. Unfortunately, some point after she turned 2 years old, she got malaria. The disease affected her so much so that she had to have an injection battle the symptoms. That injection is what Gladys now blames for her daughter’s current foot deformity. Farida’s right foot turned and now resembles a clubfoot, a condition that doctors refer to as Injection Neuritis. It happens when the syringe touches the nerves accidentally during an injection, causing the muscles to stiffen. In Farida’s case, they stiffened and moved her right foot inwards.
Thankfully, the condition is treatable through surgery, and Farida is scheduled for that surgery next month. All she needs is for people to support her in whatever way possible. This sweet, little, loving, generous girl shouldn’t be plagued by a treatable condition, and I’m just grateful God has given us an opportunity to help.

Day 483She missed the Meru mobile clinic but we were happy to see her in Embu. She continues to hate the brace, so we thank God that her mother has done a really good job at making sure that Farida wears the brace despite her daughters stubbornness. We will see her again in about eight months. http://bit.ly/WefA73
Friday February 22, 2013- Day 396Farida was a no show at the Meru clinic last week. I continue to hope that she is now used to the brace. God willing we will see her in February when we visit her home area.

Day 276Farida and her mother were excited to show off her foot and how it is doing. Only thing is, Farida hated her braces so she threw them away. The orthopedic team in Meru will replace her AFO’s then we will see her again in November. http://bit.ly/QZvNhq
Monday July 30, 2012- Day 159Farida's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 07/25/2012 - Farida and her mom should score an A for following the doctors instructions and honoring their hospital appointments. She was doing so well, our doctor decided we can wait until four months to see her again. So let us pray that they stay obedient until then.
