About Carlos
Carlos is a straightforward, 10-year-old boy from the suburbs of San Pedro Sula, with an amazing attitude towards life. Despite the fact that he was born with clubfeet, a condition that rotates the foot internally at the ankle, he has been playing soccer and running around like children his age would normally do. He knows that God has blessed his life in so many ways, so for him, it’s almost impossible to be sad. And let me tell you, he practices what he preaches. Just look at his everlasting smile! Carlos wants to be an orthopedic surgeon when he grows up, and his biggest goal in his life is to heal kids and make them smile like he does. Ever since he arrived at the CURE hospital, he has been playing with a stethoscope toy (the instrument that doctors use to listen to our heart beats) and has been "checking" every kid at the ward, including his favorite patient: a stuffed lion toy.
Carlos has had a previous operation to correct his crooked feet at the public hospital. After his operation, he wore orthopedic shoes for about two years. His legs are now straight, but he developed a malformation in his soles because of an overcorrection. His previous doctor told his family that he couldn't help him anymore and recommended that he should come to us for a proper treatment. The doctor who has examined Carlos at the CURE hospital said that he needs a bone graft (minor surgery) on his soles. Although Carlos surgery was pushed back for two days, he has been hospitalized by his own will. Being here for Carlos is like living a dream. "Well, I can't ask such a charming child to leave and come back in two days," said Ruth Castro, our Executive Director, joking, "I guess we are going to have to take him as a pre-med internship.” I pray to see Carlos someday as a doctor, and who knows, maybe even end up working at CURE ;-)

Day 235Sadly, it looks like if Carlos' ankles have suffered a positional deformity due to the weight of his body when he walks. He will requiere a triple arthrodesis in both of his feet. Friday February 1, 2013 - Day 132We finally got ahold of Carlos' father. He told us that they are temporarily living in another city, because Carlos' grandmother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and his family is taking care of her. Our hearts and prayers are with Carlos' grandmother and his family, please join us in prayer for him.
