About Tofik
Tofik is one of the few CUREkids that can speak fluent English so it was really fun getting his story. I explained to him what CUREkids is, and he said "thank you so much!" When he was 12 years old, Tofik fell on his spinal cord while playing sports one day, and that caused his back to stay bent permanently. He had an operation to correct this, but in turn it caused his right leg to become bent.
Tofik's lives at home with his parents who work day to day by picking up rocks and building roads. This does not generate a lot of money, and because he has four other siblings that his parents also have to provide for, they are very poor.
Tofik says that because he was not able to walk straight with a bent back, and now with a bent leg, people tend to talk down to him like he is a "low life," and he often feels like he doesn't belong. His condition has made life more difficult than it was before. He had to quit school in the 10th grade, but he hopes to go back eventually to become an accountant. He is not currently working, but he used to have a job at a shop, keeping up with the finances for the owner.
