About Serkaddis
Sometimes when you are working with children or even young adults with disabilities, you forget that they can be very similar to yourself. Serkaddis is 18 years old, and she longs to wear normal shoes. This is a thought that has not crossed my mind in the past. You'd think "style" would be the furthest thing from someone's mind whose foot is completely crooked, but why is that? Of course she wants to wear normal, pretty shoes, what girl doesn't?
Serkaddis is in the 10th grade, and she hopes to become a government worker when she graduates. She lives with her mom, 2 brothers, and 3 sisters. Her father is no longer living, and although her mother used to farm, she no longer works now. Serkaddis likes to make crafts, and that is a way to make a little extra income for the family.
Five years ago, Serkaddis noticed that her foot was bending, and over time it became completely crooked. Kids that used to be her friends no longer allowed her to play with them. I asked her how she dealt with that, and she said she would just cry and not say anything back to them. She longs to walk like them again, and one surgery is going to make that happen for her. Wednesday February 20, 2013 - Day 164Serkaddis's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 02/19/2013 - She got her cast off today, but left us before we could get a photo. She'll start working out her foot at home so she can walk on it. We cannot wait to see her back here in some cute shoes since that's what she is most excited for.

Wednesday May 9, 2012- Day 73Serkaddis's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 06/26/2012 - Serkaddis has another appointment next month to check her progress. I was able to get a picture of her foot without the cast on while she waiting for her new cast. I asked her if she's ready for her new shoes. She smiled real big.

Wednesday April 4, 2012 - Day 34Serkaddis is in the same bed that another CUREkid named Woinshet was in while she was recovering, and their similarities confuse me all the time. They both laugh every time I try to speak to them in Amharic. They're both older so we can sort of joke around in a different way than with the younger kids, which is refreshing. She is recovering nicely, and I still haven't forgotten about the fact that she just wants to wear cute shoes. I'm going to make sure that happens.
