About Brinelys
It's not everyday you meet a girl like Brinelys. I should have known she was hard NOT to fall in love with, as soon as I saw her smile. I quickly learned the smile was not due to her upcoming surgery, but as she told me instead, because we are "best friends".
Brinelys fell off a motor scooter two years ago, shattering her humerus, the bone in the upper arm. In the Dominican, it's very common at public hospitals to get a procedure "half-way" done. In other words, either the treatment was too quickly executed, or there was no follow-up visit for the child. Either way, when Brinelys' cast was removed a few weeks later, her arm had not been set correctly by the doctor. This left her healed arm completely bent backwards, as if it was still broken. In this position, it's extremely difficult for Brinelys to have any sort of movement in her left arm, beyond the extension of the elbow.
As I sat and talked with her, I was expecting her to be nervous about talking with the doctor. Instead she started energetically telling me about herself and what she wants to do when she grows up. And as soon as I pulled out the camera, I knew it was over. She started posing with such model-like attitude that I knew she was right..we WERE meant to be best friends.
I assumed Brinelys wanted to be a model with all of her poses, to which she quickly corrected me with an, "I used to." She went on to say she changed her mind because she now wants to be a doctor, just like her friend, Dr. Ruggles at CURE Santo Domingo.
She then went on to tell me she was very upset and then started to cry. I couldn't quite figure out why, until I re-entered the room with tissues. Her mother said it's because she was so sad that she couldn't give me a hug because her arm hurt, but she was so happy because after her procedure she would be able to.
After her surgery, Brinelys will be able to do much more than just give awesome hugs. With this procedure, Dr. Ruggles can selectively place metal rods in the bone to straighten it and pin it, making her arm once again straight when healed. With her old range of motion back, Brinelys will be unstoppable. I have no doubt that with such energy, if she wants to be a doctor, a model, or simply Brinelys, she can and will. I am so thankful that at CURE, we can provide her this opportunity for healing!
Keep this child in your prayers and show her support as her surgery date approaches, and she faces a critical recovery period ahead.

Tuesday October 30, 2012 - Day 10Brinelys's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 10/19/2012 - Due to an inability to get Brinelys into the clinic to see Dr Ruggle's today, I am unable to give you an update on her status. She has been contacted however, and her treatment date for follow up will be in one week. Continue to pray for Brinelys, as she makes her way to our clinic over the next week.

Day 1Brinelys is out of surgery! We could not have asked for a better group to perform her surgery! Dr Ruggles placed three metal pins in her arm to set the placement of the bone. A piece of her humerus was also removed in order to restore her full range of motion. The procedure from start to finish was smooth, and she even got a pink cast, just like she wanted (: God is good! http://bit.ly/PcJsCI
