About Nazar
Imagine for a moment that you’re a 15-year-old girl in Afghanistan, a country where, as a woman, you have a 35% chance of never making it to 60 years old. Now add this: you were born with a cleft lip and cleft palate.
You’ve had trouble eating and drinking your whole life, and because of your cleft palate, it’s very difficult to understand your speech. Your peers have laughed at you for most of your life, teachers don’t understand you and don’t want you around, and your parents have had to deal with the cultural stigma of having a child born with a cleft condition. Because of all of this, you’re now 15 and you’ve never completed a grade level of school.
In a country with little economic opportunity and even fewer opportunities for women, getting married and having a family someday is your best option and the dream of most girls. But because of your cleft lip, it will be difficult - nearly impossible. So a husband and a family aren’t in your future either.
You’re socially ostracized. You don’t have a basic education. You won’t find a job. You won’t get married. You won’t have a family of your own. Your life is effectively over at 15.
Meet Nazar. The story above is her reality.
Now imagine that you hear there are people in Kabul who can give you a surgery to heal your cleft condition. They can repair your cleft palate, so you can eat and drink normally; and with some assistance, you’ll be able to speak and be understood better. They can fix your cleft lip, so you don’t have to hide your face. You don’t have to be lonely. You can have a family of your own. An education. An opportunity at a real future. Tuesday March 6, 2012 - Day 35 Nazar's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 03/05/2012 - Nazar checked out of the hospital late in the day yesterday. She's scheduled for a quick followup appointment for early next week, and then her next surgery will be scheduled for 3 months from now. We'll send an updated surgery date and new picture Monday ot Tuesday next week.
