About Ali
In September of 2011, Ali Sina was born with a cleft lip and palate as the youngest of six children to a poor family in Kabul, Afghanistan. Put simply, Ali needs help.
Ali's father, Mohammad, is a cab driver, and his mother stays at home to care for Ali and his five older siblings (3 boys + 3 girls). Life in Kabul is difficult for a poor family, and it became much more complicated when Ali was born.
The first weeks of feeding and caring for any newborn are difficult, so imagine the added challenges for Ali’s mother because of the cleft condition. She struggled to ensure Ali received the nutrition he needed to survive the harsh winter in Afghanistan, and she admits to suffering from a great deal of mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion as she cared for Ali and his siblings.
Equally as difficult has been the social stigma of having a child born with a cleft lip. Afghanistan is like many places in the world where birth defects are misunderstood, and the whispers of friends and neighbors have caused Ali's parent to isolate themselves. With few options to even receive the specialty surgical care Ali needs and even less money to pay for an operation, it might have seemed that no one was in Ali's corner. But that simply wasn't the case. The God who sees, the champion of those without a champion, is intimately aware of Ali and his family, and He brought hope in the form of Afghan television.
One day on TV, Mohammad and his wife heard about a hospital in Kabul that provides life-changing surgery to children like Ali. It seemed too good to be true - that people from around the world would care enough to help their son. So with a sense of cautious optimism, Ali's parents brought him to the hospital to be evaluated by CURE doctors. That day, Ali was scheduled for a surgery to repair his cleft lip and palate.
On February 28, Ali Sina is scheduled for a life-changing surgery at CURE’s hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan. K-LOVE radio host Scott Smith will be in Afghanistan as a first-hand witness, and you can be a part of it. Follow along on your local K-LOVE station or by following his story online through cure.org.
