The CURE blog turns 2 years old

181,147

That’s the number of words that have been published on the CURE Blog since September 24, 2009. By comparison, that’s equivalent to a 650+ page novel. If you’ve been here for all 181,147 words, give us a shout out by leaving a comment.

Just over 2 years ago, CURE decided to launch a WordPress blog as a platform to communicate in an authentic and timely way from the places all around the world where CURE works to the people who help make that possible: our supporters, fans, and staff.

In those 2 years, we’ve gone from talking to you just a few times a month to almost 60 bloggers throughout CURE (we’re always looking for more), telling the different stories of CURE’s work from a dozen or more countries throughout our network of hospitals and programs. We’re glad to be able to talk to you more frequently, and hopefully the blog has allowed you to gain a larger perspective on CURE’s mission to the children and families we are privileged to serve.

Who’s work is it?

At CURE, we regularly remind ourselves that this work – the work we have all dedicated our lives to – is first and foremost God’s work. God is the one who is healing bodies and changing lives everyday, and we are all privileged to be a part of what God is already doing in the world.

You who read this blog on a regular basis, share CURE’s story with others, volunteer with CURE, work for CURE, and donate your attention, gifts, or voice are a part of that as well. Together, we all make up the community of folks “healing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God” that is CURE, and we’re sincerely grateful to you for making the work of CURE International possible.

We look forward to even greater things in this year on the blog and throughout CURE. Thanks and have a great weekend.

x

Video: CURE Presents at WordCamp San Francisco

A few weeks ago, our Director of Technology Development, John Kleinschmidt (appropriately nicknamed “jk”) was asked to present at the primary technology conference for the WordPress open source community, WordCamp San Francisco. CURE has involvement in the WordPress community because cure.org is built on the WordPress technology platform.

John was there to talk about how CURE transformed our website using WordPress and to announce CURE’s release of our Personal Fundraiser plugin for the WordPress platform. This technology, developed 100% by CURE, will be used to allow our fans and donors to setup their own fundraisers on cure.org for things like birthdays or races and to tie those fundraisers back to a specific child who will be treated through CUREkids (Lord-willing, we’ll make a broader announcement this fall).

As John announced, CURE is providing the base technology of Personal Fundraiser back to the WordPress community. The release of this plugin marks a first-of-its-kind announcement by a non-profit focused on human services (which CURE is) to the open source technology world. CURE is grateful to the WordPress community for the incredible service that they’ve provided to the children and families we serve, and we’re equally excited to be able to share a piece of our expertise with the larger community.

The talk below is definitely in the category of “geeky” for non-technical types, but for those so inclined, John’s joint presentation entitled “WordPress for the Greater Good” is a worthwhile watch (John’s the guy in the CURE t-shirt).

CURE presents at WordCamp San Francisco

I'm speaking at WordCamp San Francisco 2011!

This week, we received news that CURE’s own Director of Technology Development, John Kleinschmidt (better known as JK) has been invited to present at WordCamp San Francisco, the official annual conference of the WordPress open source project. To our knowledge, CURE is the only non profit that’s been invited to present at WordCamp.

John’s talk is entitled “WordPress for the Greater Good (CURE).”

John will be sharing with the WordPress technical community how CURE transformed its web presence at cure.org through the use of the WordPress platform and the launch of our CUREkids system.

John will also be announcing and demonstrating a brand new piece of technology that we’ve been working on this summer: an open source WordPress plugin for the non-profit community called Personal Fundraiser. We believe this technology has the potential to transform the way CURE engages our constituents and fans — and that it can do the same for any other organization that uses the WordPress platform. Look for its official release at cure.org this fall.
