Spiritual centers of excellence

I’ve written before about our ministry to the mothers and parents of the children we treat at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda. It occurred to me this morning, as I watched our staff and about 20 of our parents dance, praise, and worship together, that the uniqueness and importance of the spiritual center of excellence at a CURE hospital is as significant as the medical breakthroughs and our quality of care. CURE Haiti Update

Here is an update on CURE International’s relief efforts in Haiti.

Over the last couple of weeks, CURE International has transitioned its work from the Haitian Community Hospital to the Hôpital Adventiste d’Haiti (HAH). Below is a map of the hospital’s location in Port-au-Prince.

Like Haitian Community Hospital, CURE International has worked closely with this hospital since the first days after the earthquake. We are most grateful for the partnership we’ve had with both of these facilities.

A CURE team from the Madison, Wis., area is now on the ground serving through this week, with others to follow through March.  Dr. Scott Nelson continues in his role as the leader of CURE’s efforts in Haiti.

At HAH, there are five to ten surgeries being done per day and about 175 patients currently in the hospital.  Although the demand for surgeries had decreased, there are still many Haitians in need of follow up care.  The hospital has become one of the best run, staffed and equipped trauma facilities in the country.

CURE is also ensuring the spiritual needs of its Haitian patients are being met.

Pastor Samuel Reyes, CURE Dominican Republic’s spiritual director, recently completed his second trip to Haiti and is working with Haitian pastors to provide spiritual counseling to patients.

In early February, Dale Brantner, a senior vice president with CURE International, and his son, Jordan, spent a week in Haiti with a small team ministering to patients.

You may remember the story of Jose, one of the patients treated at the Haitian Community Hospital.  Dale reports Jose is now running around and getting back to his normal life!

Despite the many struggles, there are stories like these that continue to inspire us.

Please check back for more updates in the coming weeks.

Spiritual Ministry Update from Pastor Samuel Reyes

Here is a report from CURE Dominican Republic’s spiritual director, Pastor Samuel Reyes, regarding his initial time of ministry in Haiti.

When Pastor Seguerre Bellevue and I arrived in Haiti, we were received with joy. I started by introducing myself to the staff at the hospital to get the proper permission to do the spiritual counseling and ministry. They accepted the help with words of encouragement for us.

We began by visiting the patients outside the building. These patients were inside at one point; but once they were more stable, they were put outside into improvised tents all around the building. Outside tent patients and relatives received Jesus for the first time.

We visited most of the patients at the hospital, and everyone was happy to receive prayers and the message of hope from the Bible. I felt God’s presence at all times; the people were showing tears, smiles and thanks for the time we spent with them.

The Haitian pastors that Samuel was trying to meet to help minister at the hospital were unable to come due to traffic jams. He indicated that the pastors in Port-au-Prince cannot spare the time to help at the hospital because they need to help their communities after the tragedy.

Samuel’s next steps include meeting with a group of Haitian pastors in the D.R. and other Haitian believers who live in the D.R. who are able and willing to spend days in Haiti doing spiritual ministry.
