Mead Minutes: Wait Training

Greetings from the desert! My coffee is perking and the call to prayer is echoing across the wadi from the nearby mosque. Early morning has once again arrived; a new day is here.

After weeks of enforced waiting, I finally made some definitive progress this week. Many of you know I am not good at waiting. I like to make a plan and go forward. If the plan needs to be changed, so be it, but waiting is not one of my gifts. Several years ago a friend of mine also named Tim gave a talk at a men’s retreat about “wait training.” Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Goodbye 2011. Happy New Year!

Across the wadi

Greetings from Al Ain!! Earlier today I donned a sweater, grabbed my coffee, and took off for a walk. In Kenya, I would explore the fields and hills nearby, gazing across the expanse of the Great Rift Valley. I do not have this luxury here in the desert. Today I enjoyed what I call ‘wandering the wadi.’ As you leave the front of the house, you can look across the street through the buildings and see date palms. Between you and the palms is the wadi. A wadi is best thought of as a potential river. In the times of rare rains it may fill and flow with water; the remaining times the wadi is a dry, meandering pathway through the town. I find the wadi a quiet place to walk and wander with my thoughts. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: A cultural week

Off into the sand

Greetings from the desert!! The mornings are actually comfortably cool, making coffee a great drink. Today I have a blend called “Montana Premium.” I freely admit that Montana is not high on my coffee list of ‘must try’ blends, but the coffee was a gift — a great gift, it turns out. The blend is a nice, dark, very rich mix with a smell to tantalize the senses. I am enjoying the coffee old school American style — black, and no hint of cardamom or sugar to cloud the flavors.

This has been a great Arabic cultural week for us. Wednesday we joined with a group of off-roaders to travel the dunes out in the desert. Our friend Stephen invited us along for the new adventure. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Join in the work of CURE

Good morning from Al Ain!! Thursday we moved from the guest house into our own apartment!! Jana and I decided to use the British wording and will call it our ‘flat.’ When we moved from Kenya, we shipped little furniture here. That is a good thing as our books, quilting things, and other items are still locked in Customs storage in Dubai. The saga of this sad plight is another story. We have purchased some household items, and our beds arrived Thursday evening (evening deliveries are common, I am understanding), so we had a place to sleep. The move marked a special time which will make my kids smile—we have a complete set of plates that all match for the first time in many years!! In years past as we entertained groups you could choose your seat depending on the various colors of plates. No more! Well, I imagine as we seek to entertain more I will again break the set consistency and add colorful options. Today, I awoke with a major challenge. I bought a coffee pot but forgot to buy filters!! A paper towel just is not exactly as good. My gold filter is in a box in storage. Oh well, there are stores around town. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Thanking the taxi drivers

Good morning from the Desert!! The morning air is cool and clear; the coffee is hot and dark. Out front of the guest house, the Impatiens are all in bloom. Out back the sand is still sand. Earlier I listened to the rising, falling song of the morning ‘call to prayer.’ Gone are the mornings of crowing roosters and the views across the Rift; God has called us to a new place to serve. We are settling in to our new adventure. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Thanksgiving in Al Ain

Happy Thanksgiving from the Meads!! For the first time in many, many years I was not in charge of baking a turkey. For our first Thanksgiving in UAE, we were invited to two different homes. We celebrated both Thursday and Friday. I truly enjoyed “Black Friday,” as instead of shopping, we had a time of worship; Friday is the day of organized worship here. This morning I woke up with a smile, knowing I was to enjoy my favorite holiday breakfast—a cup of coffee (of course!) and a slice of left over pumpkin pie! I am sure it is healthy. Mead Minutes: Feast in Al Ain and clinic in Kurdistan

Greetings from the Meads!  Today the weather is warm, but there is a gently blowing breeze keeping life pleasant. Friday is our Sabbath, which I am finding still a bit confusing. Tomorrow as a Saturday is nice, but then on Sunday to return to work does not seem right. I am sure I will slowly catch on to the schedule of life here in the UAE.

Jana and I had a very interesting week. Monday, Jana again went with some Oasis ladies on Eid visits. She returned home after a long but pleasant day, tired and smelling of multiple perfumes. That evening was my turn to leave and go for an Eid feast. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Getting to know Al Ain

Greetings from the Meads!! Although it is early in the morning, the air is already warm, the skies clear, and the sun rising. I long for the view of the great valley but settle for a small courtyard with a few plants fighting to survive. Coffee is still my familiar friend as I enjoy the quiet. We are slowly learning about life in our new region. The last week was filled with new foods, new people, new places, and new traditions. I suppose that is one reason I cling to my familiar coffee mug and early morning habits.

One of the most difficult concepts for us has been changing our day of corporate worship. We have been used to joining others at church on Sundays; Friday is now the day of church and Sunday is a day of work. Read the rest of this entry »

Mead Minutes: Greetings from Al Ain!

Greetings from the Meads!! I am sipping some coffee this morning, but everything seems a bit off today. I opened the front door and saw a small enclosed space with a tree stump. Behind the low wall, a palm tree rose with its drooping branches. Where is the Rift?!?!? No birds were singing. The air was warm, much warmer than I am used to. The cool rains of Michigan have been left behind once again. This time Jana and I left alone, not to return to our comfortable Kijabe, but off on our new adventure. We are finally in Al Ain, UAE! Oasis Hospital: The Beginnings

Recently, a local newspaper in Al Ain, UAE, published a story on the “Oasis of Health.” The story quotes an interview with a long time patient of the hospital, an employee of 36 years, and our current President, Mr. David Printy. Take a look at the article here: Oasis of Health
