CURE Breaks Ground on New Philippines Hospital

CURE will one day have a new hospital in the Philippines on the island of Mindanao.

A groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated earlier this week on a pediatric orthopedic hospital that will provide advanced surgical care and loving spiritual care to the children of the Philippines.

Construction on the new hospital, which will be CURE’s 12th worldwide, is set to begin in June.

The ceremony had around 50 people in attendance, including orthopedic surgeons and local dignitaries.

Please make sure to check out the blog for more information in the coming months.

Haiti, Remembered

Jose was one of the Haitian patients CURE treated in Haiti.

At first, I didn’t take much notice when I saw the TV reports.

Breaking news.  Earthquake strikes Haiti.  Massive damage.

But then it hit me like a load of bricks. This was bad.  Really bad.  Historically bad. More than 200,000 people would eventually die from the earthquake that leveled the capital city of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010.

And within 24 hours, this earthquake became more than just a byline from some foreign country to me.  It became something much more to all of us at CURE.

The day after the earthquake, the staff at CURE’s hospital in the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s island neighbor, made a historic decision. They had to help − right away.  So, a hastily assembled team of five people carrying the barest of supplies chartered a plane and flew into Port-au-Prince.  They were among the first medical professionals on the ground.

CURE Niger Helping Young Girl to ‘Dance’ Once Again

Djelika

Djelika at the CURE Niger hospital

A couple of months ago, Karina Roark from our CURE Niger hospital shared the story of Djelika. This young girl had broken her leg after falling from a tree.  She had been playfully “dancing” on a tree limb, when she slipped and fell.

Today, she’s closer than ever to dancing again.  Under the careful watch of the hospital’s medical team, her leg shows steady improvement.

AmeriCares, a supporter of the CURE Niger hospital, posted this follow up story about Djelika.

Please keep this young girl in your prayers.  We hope she’ll be dancing again soon.

The Story of Florence and Esther

Esther and Florence

Florence and Esther

We’ve all been part of (or know of at least) “dysfunction” in our family lives. And it’s not isolated to a people group or country.  We can all relate to family dysfunction.

Esther was born into a Ugandan family full of dysfunction more than two years ago.  Her parents live in the Soroti District, working as subsistence farmers.

Her mom, Florence, was one of two wives and, shortly before Esther was born, a rift had developed between Florence and her husband.  He had sold the crops Florence had labored to plant to fund his marriage to his second wife. Justifiably, Florence did not take kindly to her husband’s actions.

Esther’s arrival soon aggravated the situation even further. She never stopped crying.  Her head size was much larger than the heads of other babies her age.
