CURE Malawi holds first-ever clubfoot soccer match

On 21st October 2011, CURE Malawi held a soccer match in which every single player on the pitch was a child who been cured of clubfoot, thanks to the Malawi National Clubfoot Programme (MNCP). The match was held at the Blantyre College of Medicine Sports Complex.

The 40 children present, ages 3 to 7 and all united in their freedom from this debilitating disability, first underwent a training course organized by coaches from the Malawi National Football Team. The two teams of players then played a match in front of an audience of hospital staff, supporters of the MNCP and CURE International, representatives from the Malawi National Football Team, and the national press. Following the match there was a presentation of certificates and prizes to the players.

This soccer match was an international first of its kind. It was primarily a celebration of the work the MNCP has done in conjunction with CURE International and the Ministry of Health. Since its foundation in 2007, almost 4,000 children have been cured and can now lead normal lives, free from the struggles of such a disability and its associated social exclusion. The small act of kicking a soccer ball, one that is enjoyed but taken for granted by children all over the world, is a miracle and a reason to be thankful for these children.

Executive Director of the hospital, Stuart Palmer, said “This children’s football match epitomizes the work of CURE in Malawi. It demonstrates the complete transformation of young lives, previously blighted by an easily curable physical disability and very painful social stigma. And who knows, some of these children may go on to be international football players – after all, Steven Gerrard was born with the same condition.”

Technical Director of the Malawi National Football Team, Jack Chamangwane, said “It really was a day for the children – they are now on their way to becoming Malawi’s next generation of top athletes. It was a real testament to the great work being done here in Malawi by the National Clubfoot Programme.”

The aim of the match was to celebrate the invaluable work carried out by the MNCP, CURE International, and the Ministry of Health in changing these children’s lives, and ultimately to raise awareness and funds.

Tim Tebow Foundation, CURE International To Build Children’s Hospital in Philippines

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JACKSONVILLE, FL, Nov. 15, 2011 – The Tim Tebow Foundation and CURE International have announced plans to build a children’s hospital in the Philippines — the country where Tebow, the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos and a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Florida, was born.

Tebow CURE HospitalThe Tebow CURE Hospital in Davao City will be a 30-bed surgical facility focusing primarily on orthopedics. The groundbreaking will be held in January 2012, and the hospital is expected to open in mid-2013.

This is the first project between the two organizations since they announced their partnership in October.

“I was born in the Philippines, and my parents have been missionaries to that area since 1985. The Philippines have always had a special place in my heart,” Tebow said. “I’m excited to be a part of this hospital that will bring healing to thousands of children who would not otherwise have access to care.”

The hospital, which is CURE’s first in the Philippines and 12th worldwide, will be on the island of Mindanao, a particularly poor area of the Philippines.

“Throughout the world, 80 million children suffer every day with crippling conditions like clubfoot and spinal deformities, conditions that are correctable with surgery,” said Dr. Scott Harrison, the founder and president of CURE International. “We feel blessed that the Tim Tebow Foundation has chosen to partner with us to bring first-world quality care and spiritual healing to the children of the Philippines.”

The construction project is expected to cost $3 million, with donors from CURE and the Tebow Foundation sharing the costs. About one-third of the children treated at the hospital are expected to be charity cases.

The hospital will house a Timmy’s Playroom, which will provide faith, hope, and love to children before and after their surgeries.  It will be the Tim Tebow Foundation’s first international playroom.

Emily update from CURE DR

We received this update from our executive director in the DR, Robbie Jackson, on the effect on tropical storm Emily.

Emily just dropped tropical rains–the worst was this morning if
you can believe that! But with heavy downpours comes trash flowing in the
street, and those who live in the barrios are subject to another cholera
outbreak. Then the mosquitoes will come. We fortunately missed the worst of
it because it hit the mountains, broke apart, and skidded off into the
Atlantic.

All is well… thanks so much for praying for us… we are grateful and we
need it more than you know!

Please continue to pray for the island as they deal with the aftermath of the storm.
